Ultra Light Fishing The Best Way To Catch Trout
By: Trevor Kugler
In my opinion, there is no better or more effective technique for catching trout than ultralight fishing. By ultra light fishing, I mean using small hooks, baits, rods, reels, and line. For example: I never use line larger than six-pound test for trout fishing. As a matter of fact, I personally use four-pound test, and don't suggest that anyone use line heavier than six-pound test. Call me a traditionalist, but I still like and use monofilament fishing line. I know there all kinds of crazy fishing lines available these days, but I still prefer monofilament.
Another aspect that I add to my ultra light fishing is the use of gang hooks. What are gang hooks you ask? Gang hooks are simply two small hooks tied in tandem that enable the angler to either present live worms in a completely natural manner or present double the bait if you're using some other type of bait. Gang hooks are an amazingly helpful trout catching tool. A worm rigged on a set of size 8 or 10 gang hooks looks completely natural and the hooks are barely visible to the naked eye. Don't you think this would be an advantage to any angler?
The other wonderful aspect of ultra light fishing for trout is that it makes you a much more proficient angler. Using ultra light equipment makes anyone learn how to play their catch, which in this day and age of Bass fishing with 25 pound test, seems to be a dying art. When you use ultra light equipment to catch trout you have to learn to play your catch, rather than just "winching" it in.
Trout can be extremely "finicky", and the use of ultralight equipment and gear help you tip the odds into your favor. Because of their finicky nature, trout are much more likely to be fooled by bait that's presented naturally. This is where gang hooks come in. Gang hooks enable you to do this better than any other method. You can tie gang hooks yourself or buy them ready to fish it makes no difference. What's important is that you being using them as soon as you can.
Ultra light fishing isn't only the best way to catch trout; it also makes you a better angler. As a matter of fact, I find it hard to fish with what most people consider to be "normal" fishing gear. The "normal" gear seems like too much to me, after using ultra light gear for so long. In any case, there's no question that the use of ultra light fishing equipment is the best way to catch trout.
