Polarized Glasses And Fishing
By: Trevor Kugler
Many anglers don't realize the importance of polarized glasses when it comes to fishing. For many years, I surely didn't. I used to buy inexpensive polarized glasses for fishing and never liked them at all. I would use them only for fishing and refused to pay more than $40 for them. As a matter of fact I didn't like to spends more than $25. Every year I bought a new pair in the hopes that they wouldn't be uncomfortable and distort my vision, but invariably every single time, they did! %This resulted in me not wearing my polarized glasses at all. They simply stayed in my vehicle and I would wear my regular sunglasses.
One day I was fishing with a friend of mine who always sang the praises of his polarized glasses and would never fish without them. He hooked a large trout and as he was battling it, he kept screaming about how big it was. I got in the water to net the fish, when he said, "do you see that fish". I kept looking, and simply couldn't see it. All I could see was the glare of the flowing water. My friend threw me his glasses, saying, "here, look now!" I looked, and was amazed, not only was the fish huge, but the clarity with which I could see into the water was remarkable!
After we landed and released the trout I asked him about his glasses. I wanted to know what they cost him, etc. He said they cost something like $150. I almost had a heart attack! Even though his glasses amazed me, I still wasn't ready to spend that kind of money. Then a week later, I went fishing by myself and couldn't stop thinking about the clarity those polarized glasses had provided me. I fished for about two hours and made a decision. I couldn't fish without a quality pair of polarized glasses ever again. I immediately went home, fired up my computer and ordered a pair of polarized glasses off of the Internet for $125. I cringed from spending the money, but after actually seeing what I had seen, I felt I had to.
That was six years ago. I still have and fish with the same pair of polarized glasses (as a matter of fact, I wear them even when I'm not fishing). I found out that when that when I invest that kind of money, I take care of that which I invest in. If I amortize my polarized glasses, they actually cost me less than I used to spend every year on cheap polarized glasses that I hated. The quality polarized glasses have actually ended up costing me less than the cheap ones! Who would have thought this would be the case? I guess what our mothers told us was right; you get what you pay for. I now know this to be the case. Why is it that our mothers always have to be right? Believe me, I don't like it any more than you do.
