Many anglers need a fishing rod but aren't sure of the best way to go about choosing one. While there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to choosing a fishing rod, there are a few key points that should help you out when choosing a fishing rod. There are so many options available as far as fishing rods go, that the task of choosing the right one can feel a bit daunting. Follow these points and you will have a much better understanding of what to look for and what you may need.
- Choose A Quality Manufacturer - Purchase a fishing rod from a quality manufacturer. There are many of them out there, and my personal favorites are Quantum and Berkley. I can say from personal experience that either of these manufactures make quality fishing rods. Although this isn't a hard and fast rule, I personally see no need to spend more than fifty bucks on a fishing rod. The manufacturers above have many choices for under $50. The bottom line is, choose quality.
- Use The Correct Action - Fishing rods comer in 5 main actions: ultra light, light, medium, medium/heavy, and heavy. Every action rod is different for the various types of fishing and fish. I'll break them down into the basic uses for each action. Ultra light ? This action is great for stream fishing and fishing for pan fish, such as Crappie. Light Action ? these fishing rods can also be used for stream and small river fishing, as well as pan fish fishing. Medium Action ? this action rod is good for light line trolling, river fishing for larger fish such as Walleye, and bank fishing for catfish and such. Medium Heavy Action ? These rods are used for trolling and bank fishing for larger fish, such as large catfish. Largemouth Bass anglers also use this action quite frequently. Heavy Action ? These fishing rods are the big boys. They are used for trolling and fishing for any large fish. Heavy action fishing rods are used quite frequently in saltwater fishing situations. None of the things mentioned above are hard and fast rules. I just listed then to give you an idea of which action is used for what situation
- Seeing Is Believing - I'm not at all against by a fishing rod over the internet, but I am against anyone purchasing a fishing rod that they've never actually had their hands on over the internet. I buy all of my fishing rods over the Internet, but I know what I'm buying. I've held the rods in my hands before, and just make the purchases over the Internet. Don't be afraid to go into a store, actually hold the rods, then write down the make and model and find a deal on the Internet.
These points should help you make a much more informed decision as far as choosing a fishing rod is concerned. My last little tip is to make sure you don't but a rod that's too "whippy". If, when you hold the handle and shake the rod, the tip feels like a whip, stay away. There's nothing worse that trying to fish with a fishing rod that?s "whippy". You can't set the hook to save your life with a rod that's "whippy".
